FAQs

  • Anyone experiencing an emergency or mental health crisis that requires urgent care should seek services through 911 or the hospital emergency room.

  • Sessions are booked during evenings from Monday to Friday between 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm, and during the day on Saturday between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm.

Voice and text messages, as well as emails, will receive a response within 48 hours.

  • Choosing to access therapy is a decision that many people consider when they are going through difficult experiences, or when they find they are still processing past painful experiences.

It is understandable that a person may feel apprehensive about speaking to a stranger regarding such personal concerns, but the nature of ethical therapy is that it is supportive, healing, and safe.

If you are undecided about the benefits of therapy for you, you can start with a free 15 minute consultation to discuss your concerns and help inform your decision.

Some people will find one therapy session is all they need, whereas others may continue with multiple sessions. It is unique to each individual’s needs and personal goals.

  • The main expectation in a therapy session is that you will be provided with a safe and non-judgmental space where you, and your experiences, will be seen and heard. You can expect that your therapist will be fully present and invested in you, and that a comfortable connection can be established.

This environment will allow you to address the needs that you determine are most important for each session.

You will be asked about your own goals for the session and your therapist will work with you in determining the best ways to meet those goals.

This may involve talking about current issues, or going further back into aspects from your childhood and past experiences.

Your therapist will check in with you to ensure you are comfortable with the direction of the session and the pace and direction are guided by you and your needs.

By the end of the session, you can expect to have skills to take with you that you will practice as you continue the therapeutic process in your daily life. This is where you can begin to see results, as you are practicing new ways of thinking, connecting with your emotions and body sensations, and monitoring behavior.

  • Self-care is a vital part of living that can easily get overlooked because of other competing demands and expectations we are trying to meet.

Self-care is a necessary part of taking care of our health and even the smallest efforts can reap big rewards for us. This could involve getting adequate sleep, going for a walk, sitting with a pet, or enjoying a cup of tea or coffee. Small steps towards self-care will be an important part of therapy as we encourage healthier habits and seek to find greater enjoyment in each day.

  • Payment options include debit and credit card transactions, cash, and e-transfer. Your invoice can be submitted to your insurance provider for reimbursement if you have coverage for mental health therapy. Payment is due on the day of your appointment.

  • While clients are welcome to bring a partner or family member to their session, we do not offer couples or family counselling.

  • Children age five and older can book appointments with Swan Therapeutic Services.

  • Cancelled or rescheduled appointments require 24 hours notice prior to the appointment time to avoid being billed for the session.

“My work with you will always be from a culturally sensitive approach and the recognition that you are the expert in your own experience. You have already walked a lengthy journey by the time we meet and my role is to be present with you for this time of growth and healing. I consider this an honour.”
